Fixing a Bearing That Won't Fit on a Shaft: Causes & Solutions

2026-03-31
Latest company news about Fixing a Bearing That Won't Fit on a Shaft: Causes & Solutions

Common Causes

1.Overly Tight Fit: Shaft is too large or bearing bore is too small.

2.Poor Installation: Force applied unevenly or at an angle.

3.Damaged Parts: Shaft or bearing is dented, burred, or out-of-round.

4.No Lubrication: High friction from dry surfaces.

Proven Solutions (In Order)

1.Use the Right Tools.

  • Press the bearing on using a proper sleeve or adapter that contacts only the inner ring.
  • Never hammer the bearing directly or press on the outer ring.

2.Apply Heat to the Bearing.

  • Heat the bearing to 80–120°C (e.g., in an oil bath) to expand its inner ring. This is the most effective method for tight fits.

3.Lubricate the Shaft.

  • Apply a thin film of assembly paste or light oil to the shaft to reduce friction during the final push.

4.Check Your Measurements.

  • Use a micrometer to verify the actual shaft diameter and bearing bore match the required tolerance.

If the Bearing Gets Stuck:

  • Stop immediately. Do not force it.
  • Remove it carefully with a puller.
  • Inspect both parts for scratches or debris, clean them, and restart with the correct method.

Prevention Tips

  • Always clean the shaft and bearing before installation.
  • Remove any burrs with a fine file or stone.
  • Have the correct tools and a plan (like heating) ready before you start.
